Travel Feature: Now is a good time to visit Victoria

You don’t have to wait to see blossoms and spring flowers.

Now is the perfect time for a weekend trip, or even longer, to the Garden City.

Travel writer Jody Robbins said there are so many great places for a stroll in Victoria, from the inner harbour to a must-see attraction, which used to be a rock quarry.

“Butchart Gardens is a national historic site and has over 55 acres to explore there, but also Beacon Hill Park, right in the city,” she explained. “It’s got a lovely children’s zoo and at the beginning and ending of the day, there’s a goat rodeo.”

The author of 25 Places in Canada Every Family Should Visit added if you like a bit more adventure, take to the waters of the Pacific, surrounding B.C.’s provincial capital.

“There’s so much you can do there, from kayaking, renting paddle boards, canoeing, exploring the inner harbour, and of course, wildlife viewing,” Robbins said. “From April to November is their peak whale viewing season.”

There’s also a lot for the little ones.

“The bug museum,” she suggested. “That’s a great one. There’s Miniature World.”

For the history buff, Victoria is a treasure trove of attractions, including one that dominates the downtown landscape. “The Fairmont Empress is right there,” Robbins said. “It’s newly renovated. Have afternoon tea there, no matter your age. You’ll enjoy that experience.”
