Safe injection sites in Calgary still in the early planning stages

Safe injection or consumption sites could become a possibility for Calgary.

HIV Community Link’s Leslie Hill is part of the Calgary coalition on Supervised Consumption. She said the recent overdose crisis plaguing the city has given the subject a new urgency, while Edmonton has grappled with this issue for years.

“We’re in more of a planning phase and Edmonton in more of an implementation stage, so there’s not different attention, it’s just at different stages,” she said.

Hill said the fault is not with the provincial government, the subject here is still in the hands of local stakeholders and they’re looking into things like demand with the city’s different demographics.

“We are working to understand the needs of the population in Calgary, that’s going to take us a little bit of time,” said Hill.

Liberal leader Dr. David Swann maintains much of the work is done and funding is the only barrier.
