Six-year-old dies in Airdrie after falling through ice

A six-year-old boy has died after falling through ice in a canal in the Bayside community of Airdrie.

He was flown by STARS to Alberta Children’s Hospital in life-threatening condition shortly after 1 p.m., but passed away in hospital.

Stuart Brideaux with EMS said emergency crews arrived at the canal around 1:15 in the 1000 block of Bayside Drive over reports two boys had fallen through ice.

“It’s not entirely clear to EMS what the circumstances were leading up to this,” he said.

The boy’s ten-year-old brother was also sent to hospital by ground ambulance in serious condition.

RCMP Cpl. Curtis Peters called it a terribly sad incident.

“This is on the worst possible type of a reminder, but please do stay off of the ice,” he said. “Our drainage ponds in our urban centres aren’t the same as area lakes.”

“Our biggest thoughts right now are with the family and express our condolences to them. This is a terrible tragedy to have happened to anybody.”

Brideaux said each boy was suffering from hypothermia.
