Survey: Fitness trackers are a good start to good health

Nearly 40 per cent of Albertans are wearing physical activity trackers, but what sort of impact are those watches, Fitbit’s or step counters making on the overall health and wellbeing of people across the province?

In a new survey released by the Alberta center for active living states, it is a good start, but the biggest killer remains lack of support to become more physically active and live a less sedentary life.

Norah Johnston, director, Alberta Centre for Active Living, tells 660 News the problem stems from something most people don’t even think about.

“Technology isn’t the only answer, it can be the motivator for some people,” she said.

“For others, we need to change the culture in the province so that physical activity is the easy choice to make, instead of things like walking into a building and the first thing you see is an elevator or escalator,” she added.

The study adds nearly one-third of Albertans sit for more than 10 hours a day.
