Northwest business owner fears his clinic may have been the target of Islamaphobia

Businessman Mustansir Raj was horrified Friday morning after receiving a phone call that the welcome sign outside the Sehet Medical Clinic in Montgomery had been defaced.

The vandalism didn’t bother him as much as what he said was the ‘hate-filled’ and ‘racist’ words that were left behind by the perpetrator.

This is what the sign should have said outside Sehet Bow River Medical Clinic in Montgomery.

Someone had changed the sign from “ACCEPTING NEW PATIENTS OPEN DAILY” to “ACCEPTING NO WHITE PATIENTS.”

Clinic owner Mustansir Raj says he was horrified to see someone had changed the sign to his clinic including what he called some "ugly" and "racist" language.

“I was really shocked and I said this is something … I can’t imagine in Canada somebody would put such a sign or mess with the original sign because it affects the business as well as it hurts,” said Raj.

A long-time member of the interfaith community, he was personally offended by what the manipulated sign said, and he’s hoping his patients know that it doesn’t reflect his own personal thoughts or views.

He tells 660 NEWS he has doctors of all creeds and colours working inside that building and aims for an inclusive atmosphere.

“Our main motto is to provide quality services and change people’s lives. It really hurts because that’s what we want to do, and some patient reading it (the sign) might not know if it’s accurate or messed up,” he said.

Raj has called the Calgary Police in hopes they will investigate and find the culprit.

He’s wondering if the sign could have been a target of Islamaphobia following recent talk of the potential ban south of the border.
