United Women’s Soccer league coming to Calgary

This summer, Calgarians will have the opportunity to see some of Canada’s most promising women’s soccer players.

Foothills WFC will be competing in the United Women’s Soccer league for the 2017 outdoor season, bringing pro-am women’s soccer to our city for the first time.

“This high-level of women’s soccer to Calgary has been a long journey that I am very pleased is moving forward,” Foothills WFC head coach Troye Flannery said. “We wanted a standards-based spring/summer league that will allow our players to maximize their development. An extension enabling motivated young adult female players to continue their development and training for post-secondary teams during the summer months as well as for professional and other opportunities.”

Calgary will play out of the Western Conference with the Real Salt Lake, Houston Aces, Colorado Storm, Colorado Pride and Santa Clarita Blue Heat.

“We are excited to have Calgary join UWS,” League Director Joe Ferrara, Jr. stated “In all my years as an administrator, I have seen many business plans and none have been more impressive than the one submitted by Foothills F.C. With its PDL men’s side, the organization has demonstrated that it is a professional operation on and off the field. Calgary Foothills will have the same positive impact on women’s soccer in North America.”

There will be open tryouts for the team, which will be announced at a later date.

The season will consist of 10-12 regular season matches.

The UWS was formed in 2015 in an effort to close the gap in the development of North American players between the collegiate level and the professional and international game.
