‘Canada-U.S. relations look fine’: Calgary political scientist on Trudeau-Trump meeting

There was a lot of talk leading up to Prime Minister Trudeau’s visit to the White House, but a local political scientist believes it was a fairly straight forward affair.

Mount Royal University’s Duane Bratt told CityNews the two leaders chose not to ruffle feathers in their public statements.

“If you take the press conference, the public statement and the prepared statement together — Canada and U.S. relations look fine and benign, compared to both countries,” he said.

Bratt said Trump consistently steered concerns back to Mexico when it came to trade and security issues, indicating he’s happy with how Canada and the U.S. work together in those portfolios.

Bratt was happy to hear both leaders mention the importance of building the Keystone XL pipeline, because it will benefit Canada and Alberta.
