Avalanche warning issued in K-Country

A special avalanche warning has been issued for Kananaskis Country.

A significant recent storm has doubled the depth of the current snowpack and winds have created dense slabs on top of a weak base of snow.

Avalanche Canada is concerned about backcountry users triggering large avalanches as the weather warms up this weekend.

The warning will be in place from Friday, until Monday.

It includes Waterton Lakes National Park, the South Rockies, the Lizard and Flathead regions.

The southern part of the Purcells and eastern part of the Kootenay Boundary in BC are also included.

Those with no backcountry experience are being urged to avoid avalanche terrain.

Highway 1 is also now closed through Glacier National Park for Avalanche control until at least 10 a.m. Friday.
