Fort McMurray government lays off 100 employees

It’s another hit to the oilsands capital, where 100 government employees were served layoff notices.

The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo announced the cuts Tuesday morning, saying it’s reorganizing ahead of finalizing its 2017 budget and financial plan.

“With the economic slowdown in oilsands growth, the impact of the 2016 wildfire and the changes to the Modernized Municipal Act (Bill 21), 2017 will be a challenging year for the organization,” stated Interim Chief Administrative Officer Annette Antoniak. “While efforts have been made to limit impacts on employees, unfortunately, this realignment has resulted in a change in staffing levels.”

Altogether, 168 jobs were eliminated; 46 of those positions were vacant. Senior management positions were cut from 25 to 12 and some departments were combined.

The RMWB says it will save $24.2 million a year and the cuts won’t impact recovery or rebuild work.
