Alberta Liberals pitch money-saving plan

The Alberta Liberal Party says a new plan for calculating electricity bills can save households up to $10 a month.

Leader David Swann says the regulated rate option, which determines that cost, is overpaying power companies.

“This process is a very easy fix, just involves a significant change to the regulation. To allow a different calculation to be used instead of what has served the producers and the retailers, and not the consumers.”

Rob Spragins is a former utilities consumer advocate who spoke at the news conference with Swann.

He says there are some exceptions.

“We’re in a situation today where we’ve got an oversupply of energy generating capacity, so I’m thinking for at least the next four to five years, we might get the odd price spike, but it will be due more to outages of coal plants, that kind of thing.”

Swann is calling on the NDP to adopt the changes, and argues they could be put in place within months.
