Family takes stand on day two of Garland trial

The father of an Alberta man charged in the deaths of a couple and their young grandchild says his son had lingering anger over some unpaid money.

Archie Garland testified in a Calgary courtroom that his son, Douglas Garland, and Alvin Liknes were developing an experimental pump for the oil and gas sector, but their friendship soured and Liknes didn’t pay money his son was owed.

Fifty-six-year-old Douglas Garland is charged with first-degree murder in the disappearance of Alvin and Kathy Liknes and their five-year-old grandson Nathan O’Brien in 2014.

The Crown alleges the three victims were violently snatched and taken to a rural property where they were killed and their bodies burned as part of a years-long grudge over the pump patent.
