Federal bureaucrats getting six-figure moving expenses: CTF

Moving for work is a reality a lot of people have to deal with.

In some cases, the employer will pick up some of the cost, but the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) has its hands on documents that show the federal government has cut some pretty sizeable cheques for its employees.

The documents show at least four government departments have handed over more than $100,000 dollars for 16 relocations.

CTF Federal Director Aaron Wudrick says in one case, taxpayers foot a $538,549 bill for an employee move from Richmond Hill to Belleville, Ontario which is a distance of about 200 kilometres.

“They do break it down in terms of the house sale, so in some cases there’s money paid out for that, also for purchases and there’s another category, but it’s clear from the numbers that the biggest chunk of this money is going towards the cost of a house,” he said, adding this is just four departments and he’s still waiting to hear from others.

Wudrick argues Canadians should expect the help pay some of the moving expenses for public employees, but not the whole thing.
