RCMP Deputy Commissioner rides off into the sunset after 35 year career

She has been Alberta’s top cop for the last three years, but now she’s hanging up her badge and gun.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police Deputy Commissioner Marianne Ryan has announced her retirement after 35 years with the service.

Ryan told 660 NEWS when she began her career she thought she’d give it a couple of years to see if it would even last. However, as time went on, things just seemed to get better and better.

“Every day, just seeing some amazing things and awesome work. It’s the opportunity to work with very strong community leaders,” she said.

Ryan said the job has certainly included challenges along the way, specifically officer involved shootings, like the tragic death of Const. David Wynn in 2015.

“We doing absolutely everything we can to protect our communities and our officers. That will always remain a priority for whoever takes this job,” Ryan added.
