ASIRT: RCMP used tear gas on suspect in fatal Stoney Nakoda shooting

New details are emerging about what led RCMP to shoot and kill a murder suspect on the Stoney Nakoda First Nation on the weekend.

RCMP entered a home at about 4 p.m. on Saturday, to arrest three people wanted on first degree murder charges in connection to the death of Lorenzo Bearspaw.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Teams says the first was arrested without incident but when Mounties went into the basement after entering the residence they were fired at, so they used tear gas and retreated back to the first floor.

ASIRT says a woman and man with a shotgun climbed out of a basement window, and the man “engaged” police resulting in several shots being fired and the man being seriously injured.

The suspect who has been identified as 27-year-old Ralph Stephens died shortly after in hospital.

ASIRT is investigating the police involved shooting, and will determine if the actions of the officer involved were justified, RCMP will continue examining the original homicide case.

An autopsy for Stephens is scheduled for Tuesday.
