New survey shows music important factor in keeping fitness goals

A lot of Canadians made the familiar New Year’s resolution to get fit in 2017.

And to stick with it, a new survey by SOCAN suggests making a playlist.

Jennifer Brown, SOCAN’s vice president of licensing, said when it comes to what Canadians committed to fitness programs and goals, music was the top motivator.

“Eighty-eight per cent of people feel that there’s an advantage to listening to music when they exercise,” Brown said. “Other big numbers were that 60 per cent of people felt it helped the time pass more quickly.”

The survey polled more than 1,500 Canadians, 78 per cent of whom said music was as important as having comfortable workout clothes on during exercise.

Brown said the survey also shows that music is important for both physical and mental health.

“We weren’t just looking at fitness, but overall feeling and overall health of Canadians, and over half of Canadians turn to music when they’re feeling sad and want to feel better.”

As for the most popular genre of music used to workout, rock topped the list.
