Hiker survives cold night on mountain near Golden

A skier spent several extra chilly hours on the side of a mountain near Golden, B.C. before being rescued early Thursday morning.

Golden RCMP were called just before 6 p.m. Wednesday after the 33 year-old told police he was unable to find his way off the mountain due to darkness.

The Golden and District Search and Rescue determined he had skied and hiked into an area known as ‘Wisdom Tooth’ southwest of Golden.

Time was of the essence because the backcountry user wasn’t prepared to stay overnight, so ground crews set out immediately, but air resources had to stay on the ground because they couldn’t fly at night.

The hiker was found by ground search crews at around 1 a.m. cold but unhurt.

Golden Mounties are crediting the dedication of the search team for the successful rescue.
