Calgary continues to be hotbed for flu activity

Recent figures from Alberta Health Services shows the Calgary Zone continues to see high Influenza activity.

Since last weekend there have been 1,028 confirmed cases with 308 admitted to the hospital, and five deaths from the virus.

That is compared to about 700 cases from two weeks ago.

Dr. Judy MacDonald, Medical Officer of Health for Alberta Health Services in Calgary, says since influenza arrived early this year than it has in two to three years so these numbers are not unusual.

“Every year it looks a little bit different in terms of what comes, what is the most dominant strain, how many hospitalized cases we’re going to see, how many deaths that will change we just know that it’s going to come and we do our best to prepare by recommending immunization and other measures such as don’t go to work or school if you’re sick and don’t go visit somebody in Acute care or long term care facility if you’re not feeling well,” MacDonald said.

The flu season usually lasts until the end of March or the beginning of April.
