Police now believe four people found dead in rural Nova Scotia were victims of a murder-suicide.

RCMP found the bodies at about 6 p.m. Tuesday after being called to the home in Upper Big Tracadie, a largely African-Nova Scotian community of about 40 people almost three hours outside Halifax.

Mounties say the dead are a 31-year-old woman, a 10-year-old girl, a 33-year-old man, and another 52-year-old woman.

A family member has identified them as her niece, niece’s daughter, husband, and the husband’s mother, who was visiting for the holidays.

The aunt told media the husband suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder after serving in Afghanistan with the Canadian Armed Forces.

A release from RCMP says all four appear to have been killed by gunshot wounds, and the man’s looks to be self-inflicted.

There were no signs of forced entry and two firearms have been seized, but a search of the area is still ongoing.

Mounties plan to hold a news conference later on Wednesday.
