Dog survives cougar attack in Whitecourt

RCMP in Whitecourt say a dog will make a full recovery after being attacked by a cougar on Boxing Day.

Mounties say it was around 6:30 p.m. Monday night when the 31 year-old Red Deer man was walking his dog in a wooded area behind a Tim Hortons in town when it was attacked.

The man proceeded to yell and punch and kick the cougar to scare it off.

RCMP Sergeant Jack Poitras says while the dog had bite marks to its throat and abdomen it is expected to fully recover from the injuries.

The cougar was then killed by RCMP members who responded to the scene.

They spoke with Alberta Fish and Wildlife who told them it would have to be destroyed because it was a threat to other pets and even humans.
