Discrepancy leads to refunds for downtown 7 a.m. parking zones

Drivers who got ticketed in the core are getting a refund.

The Calgary Parking Authority says it found a discrepancy between the changes to the 7 a.m. zones and the Calgary Traffic Bylaw.

“Late last week as part of a routine review of the bylaw we discovered that the policy and the bylaw weren’t aligned,” said Mike Derbyshire, CPA General Manager. “This means we’ve been charging for parking in those areas and enforcing without the proper authority to do so. We immediately suspended enforcement and will be refunding any tickets issued and parking fees collected from 7 a.m. until 9 a.m. in the affected pricing areas since August 1 of this year.”

In August, paid parking was extended in three areas in downtown (4a, 4c and 4d) meaning drivers had to start paying as early as 7 a.m. instead of 9 a.m.

After the change, more than 800 parking tickets worth $50,000 in fines were collected. Another $100,000 in parking fee have been collected.

Those who paid cash or credit in the zones from 7 a.m. until 9 a.m. can email refunds@calgaryparking.com with their name, phone number and license plate so Calgary Parking can contact them about a refund.

ParkPlus cellphone account holders will get credits to their accounts and violation tickets in the court system will be withdrawn immediately. Any convictions will be quashed and fines will be refunded.
