Mayor Naheed Nenshi brings holiday cheer to Central Public Library

Families packed into the first floor of the Central Public Library for Christmas story time with Mayor Naheed Nenshi Sunday all in support of the Calgary food bank.

There were sing-alongs, crafts, candy canes and of course a visit from Santa Claus.

Over a hundred kids gathered onto the carpet to hear Nenshi read modern and classic Christmas tales like T’was the Night Before Christmas.

“Over the years we have made a real Christmas tradition in different locations with different groups of kids of doing a Christmas holiday reading because I really do think that especially when times are tough we need to be reminded that we live in a community where we look after one and another and we care about each and doing fun things like this is a great way to do it.” Nenshi said.

Nenshi says this is one of his favourite things to do during the holidays.

“We’ve got kids from every possible background including kids who are refugees from Syria who came to listen to me read and that’s really touching that a year into their journey they’re sitting here on my knee and we’re talking Christmas and I love that.”

The Mayor’s holiday plans include spending time with family and friends, curling up with a good book and kicking off Canada’s 150th birthday with Calgary’s big News Year’s Eve celebrations.
