NDP gets points for pipeline approvals, but majority of Albertans would still vote Wildrose: poll

The Trans Mountain and Line 3 approvals are boosting the government’s rating among Albertans, with a new poll saying about 41 per cent believe the NDP is doing a good job on energy and pipelines.

An Insights West poll surveyed 701 Albertans online in the days after Ottawa’s announcements on the project.

But, it’s not enough to make Notley the top pick to run the province.

Seven in 10 of those surveyed believe the economy and jobs are the most important issue facing the province, and that could be why the NDP ranked second in support — in a tie with the PCs.

Insights Spokesperson Mario Canseco says the economic focus shows a shift away from longstanding concerns over healthcare.

“Especially if we go back to the early years of the century. Even going back to 2008, right before the economic crisis broke, healthcare was the number one issue. It really stayed that way, whereas the rest of the country was more worried about the economy because of the crisis that we had back in 2008,” he said.

The polls says almost 40 per cent of voters support the Wildrose and Leader Brian Jean’s approval rating is at nearly 50 per cent — the highest of provincial party leaders.
