British Santa tour worker fatally stabbed in Arctic Finland

HELSINKI – Finnish police say they are holding a 36-year-old foreigner suspected of fatally stabbing his female friend in the Arctic wilds of Lapland. Tourism officials say the victim was a British employee.

Lapland police said that after Saturday’s stabbing, the suspect fled into the forest in temperatures of -30 C (-22 F). After a manhunt with several police patrols and helicopter he was found lying in the snow suffering from hypothermia.

Britain’s Press Association reported the woman was a member of Santa Safari, which organizes Christmas-themed excursions to Lapland. The company confirmed Monday that one of its female employees was discovered dead on Dec. 3 and that it’s assisting Finnish police.

Police said they detained the suspect Sunday after he was released from a hospital. The suspect’s nationality wasn’t immediately provided.
