Snowfall expected to stick around, bring cooler-than-average temperatures

The flurries are falling in Calgary, in the start of what could be 10 centimetres of snow in certain parts.

Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning for the city and surrounding areas Sunday morning, as band of snow from the north and west started moving into the region.

“Conditions may deteriorate, mainly on the western portion of the city, over the next few hours as this band moves down and models [are] indicating it probably won’t push right across the city in totality, but mainly on the western sections,” says Meteorologist Tim Gaines.

Other parts of Calgary could see just five centimetres of snow, which is expected to taper off in exchange for a sudden winter chill.

“Light snow will dominate as the Arctic air deepens and temperatures will plummet this evening. And we’ll probably get some pretty good winds, as well as in the evening hours, which will increase the wind chill as well. So that’s what we’re looking at over the next 12 hours,” added Baines.

Environment Canada expects the temperature to drop to a low of -15 tonight, but with the wind chill it will feel more like -26. While the winter weather is late coming, meteorologist say the snow is just on point for this time of year but the temperatures are much cooler than the average.
