The federal government has taken another step in regulating the chemicals used to make fentanyl in hopes of addressing the current crisis.
Health Minister Jane Philpott announced Wednesday they published new regulations for six chemicals in hopes of making it harder to make the drug.
Among the additional measures they’ll be looking at, the plan focuses on informing Canadians about the risk of opioids, supporting better prescribing practices and reducing easy access to unnecessary opioids.
“This will be helpful in order to make sure law enforcement officials can appropriately intervene in the movement of these chemicals that are used for illicit substances,” said Philpott on Parliament Hill.
They’ll also be supporting better treatment options and look to reduce the drug’s availability.
The regulations will come into force immediately due to the urgency of Canada’s opioid crisis.
There have been hundreds of deaths in both Alberta and British Columbia, arguably two of the hardest hit provinces.
