RCMP reaches agreement with China to combat flow of fentanyl

The Mounties are getting some help from China in the fight to stop the flow of illegal fentanyl and other opioids into Canada.

The RCMP and China’s Public Security Ministry have agreed to work together in bolstering co-ordinated law enforcement actions to
disrupt the supply of fentanyl and synthetic opioids.

Commissioner Bob Paulson met with Chinese Vice-Minister Chen Zhimin in Ottawa where they agreed that discussions to formalize
joint investigations will begin next week.

Thursday’s announcement comes a week after B-C Premier Christy Clark called on the federal government to crack down on fentanyl imports from China.

In Alberta, it’s believed the opioid, which 100 times more powerful than heroin, has killed about 200 people. One of the ways the province wants to combat the problem is by setting up consumption sites for opioid addicts.
