ASIRT investigating fatal police shooting involving stolen vehicle

Alberta’s Serious Incident Response Team is investigating an officer involved shooting in Calgary.

It’s the 9th time they’ve been called into the city this year.

A man was shot in a strip mall parking lot in 5000 block of 16th Avenue northwest at around 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday, and later died of his injuries in hospital.

The 49-year-old man, identified in several reports as Terrence Weinmeyer, died and a stolen blue pickup truck was in the middle of a cluster of vehicles where everything happened.

A second person was taken into custody, but no charges have been laid. ASIRT has asked police not to release any other information.

But, at a news conference Tuesday night, Acting Deputy James Hardy spoke in generalities about what leads to these incidents.

“In what seems to be like a nightly occurrence, the high frequency of crime trends, such as stolen vehicles, give rise to serious officer and public safety concerns.”

He adds a majority of what they’re dealing with is drug related, but it’s not fueled by cocaine, heroin or meth like it was in the past.

“Right now, you’d be hard pressed to be able to even purchase cocaine or meth. A bulk of the stuff that we’re dealing with is fentanyl.”

This year alone, police have responded to more than 4,000 stolen vehicle calls.
