BMO donates $2-million for Fort Mac recovery

It’s a $2-million boost for those dealing with the aftermath of the Fort McMurray wildfire.

BMO Financial Group has announced money for seven different charities helping with rebuilding and recovery.

It’s the largest donation of its kind in the bank’s history.

Susan Brown, BMO’s Senior VP for Alberta, says $275,000 will be donated to Keyano College.

“It’s going to be used for scholarships for people who might not be working but want to re-train, or for families who can no longer afford to send their young people to college as a result of the financial losses that they’ve suffered,” she said.

BMO is also handing over $500,000 to the United Way, and $500,000 to Habitat for Humanity.

“I know there were a lot of people in this community whose houses were uninsured or under-insured and so the funds that we’ve donated to Habitat for Humanity will allow us to help build new housing for people who lost everything,” Brown said. “And we have a big employee build plan in the spring which I think is going to be really fun, so, we’ll have a lot of our employees involved in actually building the houses.”

In addition to those donations, $150,000 will go towards the Wood Buffalo Food Bank, $150,000 to the YMCA of Northern Alberta, $100,000 for Waypoints, helping women and families in crisis, $100,000 for Wood’s Homes’ Stepping Stones program, $100,000 to the Canadian Red Cross and $125,000 for additional community support and events.
