Calgary couple fined after animals found in filthy conditions WARNING: graphic images

A Calgary couple has received a fine of nearly $14,000, as well as a lifetime ban from owning animals, after dozens of pets were found living in filthy conditions inside the couple’s home.

In August of 2014, the Calgary Humane Society, Calgary police, and Animal Services seized 92 animals from an Erinwoods home after finding rabbits, hamsters, a dog, and a cat living in unsanitary conditions.

Several of the animals had to be euthanized due to untreated medical problems.

During the seizure, a peace officer was threatened and assaulted.

Brad Nichols, manager of animal cruelty investigations with the Humane Society, said the case is disturbing, but it’s encouraging to see it being taken seriously by the courts.

“This case encapsulates many of our greatest concerns from the various types of severe neglect and hoarding, to the danger our officers faced when the owner became violent,” he said in a statement. “This sentence reflects both the punitive aspect of the offences while also taking into account future animals with the prohibition.”

Anthony and Christine Berry were charged with causing unnecessary pain and suffering to an animal, and failing to provide adequate care. Each has been fined $6,900.
