Teen killed in SW single vehicle crash

A boy in his late teens has died after a single vehicle incident in the community of Southwood.

Calgary Police confirm the young man was transported to Rockyview Hospital where he succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash.

“We had a male in his late teens that was taken out of the vehicle and transported to hospital in life threatening condition,” Staff Sargeant Paul Stacey told 660 NEWS. “At this point we don’t know what caused the vehicle to run off the road. It looks like speed was involved, there is a significant amount of damage.”

Emergency crews responded to the area of Elbow Drive and 104 Avenue SW around 4:00 a.m., Friday morning.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash. “[It] doesn’t look like any impaired, at least by alcohol that’s an issue,” Stacey said, adding several variables remain which could include drugs or a medical condition.

“You know, it’s a side road. There is no particular reason to be going fast, down here, and there’s no particular reason why he would have run off the road. There’s a lot of unanswered questions, so we have some work to do,” Stacey said.

Initial reports suggest the dark-coloured SUV ran off the road, knocked down a light post and hit a tree.

The CPS Traffic Unit has taken over the investigation.
