Albertans remember Jim Prentice at state memorial

Jim Prentice’s daughter has thanked Albertans for their gracious outpouring of support in the days since her father’s sudden death.

Speaking to about 15-hundred mourners gathered at a memorial in Calgary today, Cassia Prentice said that so often in the last two weeks Albertans have found the words that have failed her family in their time of grief.

She urged everyone to stand tall on the foundations her father built as premier of Alberta, as a federal cabinet minister and in his family life.

Premier Rachel Notley called Prentice’s death an unspeakable tragedy, but said his legacy will live on in Alberta for years to come.

Former prime minister Stephen Harper says Jim Prentice was one of the most capable politicians in his inner circle when they served together in Parliament.

Harper says that meant that Prentice always got the tough jobs.

Harper recalled a conversation he once had with U-S president Barack Obama about Prentice, saying Obama wanted Canada to send someone to Washington to hammer out policy on energy and the environment.

Harper says he told Obama he was sending Prentice because he was the best person he had.

Prentice was killed in a plane crash earlier this month in British Columbia.

He and three other men died when a twin-engine Cessna Citation crashed shortly after takeoff from the Kelowna airport on October 13th.

Prentice was 60 years old.
