Spooky Alberta: the province’s most eerily-named destinations

Those looking for a spooky getaway this Halloween need to look no further than Alberta’s own backyard.
The Alberta Motor Association is out with a list of haunts with eerie monikers.
Nikola Berube with AMA Travel says Dead Man’s Flats, just southeast of Canmore, is always a popular place to visit.
“There are lots of stories of how it got its name, but one of them came from a murder at a dairy farm in 1904, and another one from a shooting in a nearby cabin in 1940,” she explained. “So, it’s thought to be haunted.”
It could be the perfect place for a hike.
And then there’s Ghost Lake, along the Bow River upstream from Cochrane.
“This lake was formed in 1929 by the construction of the Ghost Dam,” Berube said.
It was named for very old legends of a spirit prowling the valley collecting skulls.
Spirit Island also tells a story or two.
“The famous island in Maligne Lake in Jasper National Park, and it’s a great destination for taking a little boat trip out there. It attracts hundreds of tourists during the summer season, but it’s a great picturesque spot to go to out in the Canadian Rockies,” Berube explained.
She says travelling during the ‘dead season’ from October to December can help you save a buck and avoid the crowds.
But, you might not want to visit after the sun goes down: there are tales of a restless ghost wandering the island, searching for lost love.
