Mumbai call centre bust stops CRA scammers

A recent call centre bust in Mumbai, India has virtually stopped a rampant phone scam here in Canada.

The Better Business Bureau says the Canada Revenue Agency tax scam took its number one spot in national scams in 2015, bilking Canadians out of nearly $3-million last year.

The scam has the caller pretending to be with the CRA, and demanding instant payment for missed back taxes.

The BBB says Mumbai police arrested 70 people and are questioning hundreds more from the call centre which targeted North Americans.

It says the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre would receive more than 300 calls a week about the CRA scam, but in the week following the early October bust, that number dropped to just 25.
