Driver released from custody in deadly crash likely fuelled by speed and alcohol

A 28-year-old woman is out of police custody, pending further investigation into a deadly crash on Country Hills Blvd. and Metis Tr. N.E.

Calgary police shut down the major intersection for several hours after responding to the collision at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

When emergency crews arrived at the scene, they found a Kia Forte and Dodge Journey were involved, and a number of victims were trapped in the car.

The Calgary Police Service Traffic Section says a 43-year-old man was driving a white Kia Forte east on Country Hills Blvd. towards Metis Tr. and was proceeding through a green light when the car was struck by the SUV running a red light.

A male in the front passenger seat of the smaller vehicle was declared dead on scene.

Calgary police confirm the victim was a 19-year-old man.

Alberta Health Services say paramedics helped extricate three people from the car and rushed them to hospital, with two patients suffering potentially life-threatening injuries.

No one in the Journey was seriously hurt, but Alberta Health Services says a man was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The woman who was behind the wheel was initially arrested, but has since been released.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash to call the Calgary Police Service Traffic Section at 403-567-4000, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
