Alberta medicinal marijuana company plans to expand exponentially

Alberta’s only licensed medicinal marijuana grower is investing more green into the Alberta economy in hopes of growing more green.

Aurora Cannabis is planning on building a new facility or expanding to its current facility in Mountain View County, it’s still unclear but they’re looking to have the first phase done before mid-2017.

They’ve quickly grown to become one of the largest, legal medicinal marijuana suppliers in the country after beginning commercial operations at the start of the year.

If all goes as planned, that means they will expand their output from 7,000 kilograms a year to something 10 times that figure.

Company officials recently made the decision to sell on the more established TSX Venture raising more than $60-million in capital.

Senior Vice-President Cam Battley says much of that revenue in turn will be re-invested into their Alberta operations.

“We see a real advantage from being based in Alberta, Alberta has reasonable labour costs even though we pay well above minimum wage ourselves, it has reasonable levels of taxes and it also has very competitive, low power rates.”

“We’ll probably be adding at least an equal number of employees via our expansion once it’s fully completed.”

Aurora Cannabis currently employs roughly 100 employees, many of whom commute from Calgary.

Battley adds they are confident they’ll be able to adapt if and when legalization becomes a reality in Canada.
