Blood Tribe council and Lethbridge mayor meet after Tribe member accused in assault

The chief and council of the southern Alberta Blood Tribe are scheduled to meet with the mayor of Lethbridge today to discuss charges against one of its members.

Blood spokesman Rick Tailfeathers says the meeting with Mayor Chris Spearman is to get a dialogue going after police in Lethbridge charged a man with attempted murder last week after the woman was randomly attacked and sexually assaulted while walking to work.

The 25-year-old woman remains in a medically induced coma to help control bleeding in her brain and also has extensive head injuries.

Denzel Dre Colton Bird, who is 20, is charged with aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault with a weapon, aggravated assault and break and enter.

The band issued a statement on the weekend expressing its concern for the victim, saying it does not condone violence.

It also expressed concerns about possible backlash from residents in Lethbridge after the suspect was identified as being from the Blood reserve.

Tailfeathers says some residents have alleged harassment, but would not provide any details.
