Hillhurst-Sunnyside residents horrified after finding anti-Muslim posters

Anti-Muslim posters have begun to surface in mailboxes in Hillhurst-Sunnyside and Calgary police can’t confirm whether it may be connected to a similar incident at the University of Calgary.

Tamara is a third generation Canadian and she told 660 NEWS she was horrified to find a leaflet in her mailbox.

“We found a piece of hate propaganda which was very, very shocking and upsetting,” she said. “It was anti-Muslim and we’ve never seen anything like this in all the years we’ve been living down here.”

She was immediately sickened to think that a Muslim may find something like this in their own mailbox.

“We all have to stand up for our friends and neighbours because this is unacceptable and I honestly feel that Calgary is better than this,” she stated. “I was born and raised here and I just can’t believe that someone would put something like this in a mailbox.”

She and her husband have filed a report with the police after hearing about similar posters on the university campus.

“This is not acceptable; this is our community and we have to stand up for our friends and neighbours.”

Liberal leader David Swann is the MLA for the area and has since tweeted he received something similar. It’s a flyer of a man kicking another holding a Qu’ran and telling people to go back to where they came from.

In a statement provided to 660 NEWS, Swann said:

Today in a horrible act of hatred and cowardice, racist and Islamophobic flyers were delivered to the mailboxes of many of my constituents, myself included.

I have served this constituency since 2004 and I know, without any doubt, that our community is caring, open and hospitable to everyone. I strongly believe that the hostility expressed in these flyers voice the ignorant views of a very small minority.

Calgary was built on the contributions of generations of multicultural citizens and immigrants. I want to assure all residents of Calgary-Mountain View, and indeed Calgarians of all ethnicities and backgrounds, that you are important, contributing, valued members of our community.

No word yet on how many might have received the flyer from the group who calls itself “This is European Canada”
