Fish disease spreads near Banff National Park

There’s been an expansion of whirling disease in our province.

According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, it has been detected in six more locations near Banff National Park, including in the Bow River by Tunnel Mountain.

It was first detected in Johnson Lake in late August.

Although whirling disease poses no risk to humans, it impacts fish populations. It may cause infected fish to swim in a whirling pattern and then die prematurely.

It can be transmitted to other water bodies through fish and equipment used for swimming, paddling, boating and fishing.
