More people left Alberta from March to May than moved here

It’s another indication of how serious our ongoing recession is.

ATB Financial reports an exodus from Alberta continues to grow.

Figures say between March and May around 22,000 people arrived in the province, while over 24,000 packed up their cars and moving vans for other parts of Canada.

Chief Economist Todd Hirsch says it’s modest compared to other recessions, and he has a couple theories as to why.

“Compared to the ’80s, we have a much higher of two income households, where both adults — if there are two adults in the house — they’re both working. So, the option is one of those workers gets laid off at his or her job, the option is okay, we can stay here and stick it out with one income, or we can move to another province and we’re both unemployed,” he said.

It’s the third consecutive quarter that a net outflow of people from Alberta has been recorded.
