Fan organized vigil for Mylan Hicks to take place at McMahon

Fans of the Calgary Stampeders have organized a candle light vigil for slain football player Mylan Hicks Wednesday night at McMahon Stadium to express their grief.

It comes as his family begins to arrive in the city from Detroit.

Hicks, who was 23, was gunned down at the Marquee Beer Market Sunday morning while trying to diffuse an argument.

Stampeders head coach Dave Dickenson says it’s a terrific idea.

“It’s great, I think it’s the right thing to do,” he said. “I just think people have reached out to us in many, many ways, I know the parents are in town today and Huff is grabbing them from the airport and a lot of our players are really looking forward, and coaches and staff, to meeting them and sharing stories.”

“I think the guys are going to reach out, as well as our front office and coaching staff and hopefully connect with the parents and there are some good stories and memories that we can share,” Dickenson added.

Hicks’ sister Jazzmine Fowlkes says her brother was a doting uncle to her two young sons and even though he was six years younger, he often acted like a big brother to her.

She can’t believe he’s gone.

“I had just got off the phone with him and asked him when he was coming home, he said ‘in December’ and I couldn’t wait, I was looking forward to that.”

Fowlkes says pain shot through her body and she screamed when police told her what happened.
