Mylan Hicks’ former teammates plan to wear black in his honour

Michigan State Football will wear black the rest of the season in honour of their fallen teammate Mylan Hicks.

The 23 year old Detroit native was gunned down at Marquee Nightclub in Calgary early Sunday morning after he tried to intervene in some kind of an altercation in the parking lot.

Spartans Coach Mark Dantonio took the podium in Lansing Tuesday.

He says their thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and those he knew within the football community.

“We’ll do some special things in the upcoming weeks,” he said. “Mylan loved to wear black, he liked the black Spartan gear and that’s why I wore it today, in honour of him.”

“We’ll honour him with the number 6 on the back of the helmet this weekend and then also we’ll wear black socks and black shoes, we probably travelled down there with 41 players I think I counted that played on the team with him so he’ll be on a lot of people’s minds as we move forward.”

Dantonio says Hicks was the type of guy who loved football, loved to compete and would go 100 miles an hour.

“He would be very disappointed in us if we did not do that on a game by game basis, throughout practice and everything that we try to accomplish here and go after,” he said.

The head coach says it’s a tragic event and it speaks to how life can change on people very quickly.

It’s the second death in that class in recent months after the death of another player, Mike Sadler, in Wisconsin back in July.

“You just take what you’ve got now and cherish it.”
