Two homes heavily damaged after early morning fire in Airdrie

Airdrie first responders are continuing to investigate after an early morning fire ravaged two homes in north Airdrie early Monday morning.

Fire crews were first called to 1147 Williamstown Blvd N.E. in around 4:40 a.m.

They got to the scene five minutes later and found flames and smoke spreading quickly through the house and into an adjacent property.

Everyone inside made it out safely and onto the street, they were all assessed by paramedics on scene.

The fire was held to the two homes, a third neighbouring home didn’t sustain damage and those home owners have since been allowed to return.

“We haven’t had the insurance people out to see the site yet, investigators are still on scene,” said Airdrie Fire Chief Kevin Weinberger.

According to Weinberger, there was a family in one of the homes and a couple in the other, in total they had to evacuate five properties.

“Our investigators will be on scene for probably the next five days for sure, they’ll dig amongst the rubble and try to find a cause,” he said.

Officials say the fire was extinguished quickly but it continued to smolder making it a difficult job.

They’ve been using thermal imaging cameras to assist with overall operations.

There’s no word yet on a damage estimate.

It took twelve firefighters with four pieces of equipment, an ambulance, and RCMP to control the situation.
