Thousands of Alberta health records accessed inappropriately

You could be getting a letter in the mail from Alberta Health Services if you’re one of the thousands of Albertans whose health records were accessed inappropriately.

AHS is notifying 1,309 people about the privacy breach involving a former employee. More than 11,500 others had their demographic information viewed by the same worker.

“The protection of patient privacy is not only a legislated duty of our employees, it’s part of our patient-first culture, and our values,” states Interim Vice President Dr. Francois Belanger, Quality and Chief Medical Officer. “We take privacy incidents very seriously, and continue to work with our employees to ensure they’re supported with privacy education and regular communication.”

AHS is investigating the incident and says the breaches occurred between January 2004 and July 2015 through electronic records and other systems. The records weren’t altered in any way.

Those impacted will receive letters. Patients can also call a Health Link number included in the letter, for more information.
