Seattle man becomes social media superstar for taking a stand against Canadian fans

Daniel Carroll carried with him 8 signs into Safeco Field this week with a goal to get noticed and it appears to have paid off.

The life-long Seattle Mariners fan has become a social media superstar for those placards that took aim at Canada, in particular Blue Jays fans.

Toronto’s MLB team just finished up a swing through the west coast city.

He tells 660 NEWS his goal was to defend the home turf from a horde of die-hard “Canucks”.

“It kind of originates from another set of signs that we did,” he said. “A couple of years ago Hunter Pence, whose an outfielder from the Giants, went to New York and had a silly incident where the Mets fans made fun of him with a bunch of silly signs like ‘Hunter Pence can’t park.'”

Carroll told his friend Megan who he watches the games with and she was all for it.

“She goes ‘We’re going to Hunter Pence Canada?’ I’m like “yeah, let’s go.” he laughed.

He knew a few of the signs he wanted to run including a “Sorry” sign with a Seattle “S” and the Stanley Cup sign which were the first two.

A friend of his suggested the milk bags sign while another on Twitter thought of the composting maple leaf sign.

“Reaction from the game was pretty positive, we hung out at Centre Field pre-game, mostly because I wanted to show the local broadcast guys what I was running with and how I was going to defend my turf,” he said. “But of course that area was overrun by Jays fans and they all wanted to see the signs.”

Carroll says he received some haggling over hockey which turned into an invalidation somehow of Joe Carter.

“I had one woman, most folks out in Western Canada I understand don’t speak French and so when they saw the sign that was in French which was intended at least to say ‘this is the sign we made to make fun of you in French’, she took a minute and said ‘wait a minute I went to French Immersion class I got this’ and then said ‘wait a minute, you’re making fun of me’, it was great.”

He did get a few expletives and maybe a middle finger but he says those people were in the minority.

“We’re all just having fun, it’s not a big deal!”

And it appears many Canadians have also agreed with him, his posts have been retweeted thousands of times.

Carroll says it’s been tough heading to Mariners games and watching the ball park over run by Toronto fans.

He’s avoided Blue Jays games until this stage but after the response he’s gotten, he thinks he may have to change his position.

“I’ve decided it’s time to step up, my Mariners are gunning for a playoff spot, i want to let these Canadian fans know they’re not going to take me lying down, I’m going to at least give them an elbow to the ribs or something,” he joked.

“It’s popping up all over the place, the number of retweets and likes on that Twitter post, I think I’m going to have to try it again next year and come up with some new material.”
