Alberta paramedics will now have access to additional treatment tools and be better equipped to serve patients in rural and remote areas.
This is because of the transfer of the paramedic profession from the Health Disciplines act to the Health Professions Act.
Associate Minister of Health Brandy Payne says paramedics will be able to administer a wider variety of diagnostic tests, including portable laboratory blood testing and ultrasounds.
“Using a mobile laboratory, paramedics can even diagnose a wide variety of medical conditions. Including whether a patient is experiencing cardiac arrest, or if there is a different issue that’s causing similar symptoms,” Payne said.
Alberta has approximately 10-thousand registered paramedics.
