Several Alberta communities cut off from contacting hospital or calling 911

Several towns and municipalities in northwest Alberta have been cut off from contacting their hospital or calling 911 Wednesday.

It’s all because of a fibre cable that was cut about 20 kilometres north of Dixonville, on the west side of Highway 35.

Dixonville is roughly 43 kilometres away from Grimshaw and 212 kilometres northeast of Grande Prairie.

Phone lines and networks are currently down at St. Theresa General Hospital in Fort Vermilion, La Crete Continuing Care/Community Health and Manning Community Health Centre.

Anyone whose in those communities and in need of emergency medical help is being urged to head to the centre themselves.

In the meantime, AHS says it is enacting its contingency plan to ensure patient care isn’t affected.

No word yet on how long it’ll be until service is restored.
