Calgary dentist: Education key when it comes to fluoride

A Calgary woman who has felt the negative effects of fluoride being removed from the city’s drinking water is pleading with council to give the issue another look.

Cindy Riad is disappointed councillors voted Tuesday to not even consider reversing the decision made in 2011.

“Why do you think you see the homeless with no teeth or rotting their system?” she questioned. “They can’t even drink water to help them with that.”

She added, the province should step up and doing something.

Local dentist Dr. Roger Shinkaruk said he thinks council seems to be making uninformed decision driven by people using scare tactics.

“In the politest way I can say it, it’s just ignorance,” he stated to 660 NEWS. “You have to remember the amount of fluoride for someone to consume for it to do any harm to their bodies for an average 150 lbs. person would be roughly 1,500 glasses of water in a short period of time.”

He added, the water would kill you before the fluoride. However, the real concern is the health effects of bad teeth, because it is statistically proven to shorten your life.
