Former Lt.-Governor Norman Kwong remembered at public state memorial

He was a member of the Order of Canada and a Canadian football pioneer.

Alberta’s 16th Lieutenant-Governor Norman Kwong will be remembered Tuesday afternoon, at a public state memorial in Calgary.

Kwong passed away September 3, at the age of 86.

He led an interesting life, winning the Grey Cup at just 18 years old as the first Chinese Canadian in the CFL.

He played for both the Calgary Stampeders and the Edmonton Eskimos, and later in 1989, he would see his name on a Stanley Cup, as part owner of the Calgary Flames.

Kwong was active in supporting many charities, and continuing his philanthropy, a memorial fund has been set up in his name to support youth in sports, with a focus on new and underprivileged Canadians.

The public is welcome to attend Tuesday’s service at the First Alliance Church on 40 Street SE, with seating on a first-come, first-served basis, and are asked to take their seats by 2:40 p.m.

Albertans are also invited to sign a book of condolences at the McDougall Centre or the Alberta Legislature.

In lieu of flowers, Kwong’s family is asking donations be made to the Calgary Foundation.

The memorial will be live-streamed here at 3 p.m.:
