MRU campaign brings cost of textbooks to light

What can university students do with all the cash they drop on textbooks?

At Mount Royal University, some students have better ideas of how to spend the money.

MRU’s Students’ Association is joining the #textbookbroke campaign, which originated on the west coast.

President Shifrah Gadamsetti says the books are pricey and often outdated within a few years.

“We’ve had students spend anywhere from $100 to $700 and they’ve listed anything from recreational activities, to rent, to gas, to supplies at home for their family. It just really is a pretty significant cost.”

She says the traditional textbooks are still useful, but they can be mixed with alternatives such as resources that are published online under creative copyright.
