Calgary Zoo takes on major role at World Conservation Conference

The Calgary Zoo is showing off some of its successes saving endangered species at a global conference.

It’s launching the first Global Re-introduction Training Workshop for conservation groups, thanks to the success of programs in Calgary.

“It’s the work that we’ve done in and around Calgary and in Western Canada that’s actually developed a reputation for ourselves, where we’re now leading this subject in many ways on a world stage,” Dr. Axel Moehrenschlager, Director of Conservation, said.

Moehrenschlager will also be on hand for the launch of a United Nations Development Program book, featuring the Calgary Zoo’s efforts to save hippos in Ghana.

The World Conservation Congress in Hawaii began this week with a warning: eastern gorillas are now considered critically endangered.

But there is also good news: giant pandas are now listed as vulnerable instead of endangered.

Calgary will play host to four of the bears, on loan from China, starting in 2018.
